My Peter Duel Dream
This is one my first sad Pete Duel dreams I have ever had. In this dream, Pete was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis and pneumonia from being a heavy smoker.
I was on the set of "Alias Smith and Jones" watching them film "The Biggest Game in the West" when Pete came over toward me and said, "Come here for a minute. I want you to do me a big favor. I went to the doctors a few days ago and they said I'm terminally ill with chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. They also told me I have less then 2 months to live because my lungs are so clogged up. The favor I want you to do is try and dub my voice in case I don't make it." I couldn't believe what he was saying. Tears started forming in my eyes and he hugged me tightly saying "I've watched you. You'll be fine."
So, we walked over toward the studio where the scenes had to be looped when the audio for all the scenes was re-recordered since you weren't able to hear any of the actors talking in the outdoor scenes. Pete said, "What I'm going to do is read a few of my lines and after I do finish reading, I want you to read the same lines but try to imitate my voice." So, he read his lines where Heyes and Curry were outside on their horses talking before Heyes rode off. He finished the scene and now it was my turn to read the lines. The first time I went through it, my voice was very shaky because I was very emotional, thinking that Pete wasn't going to be alive in the next month, and I was nervous too but the second time, I finally got the hang of his voice and did it perfectly. He told me to hang on for a minute 'cuz he was gonna get Roy Huggins, Glen Larson and the rest of the cast/crew to come over to the studio and listen to me dub his voice. While Peter was out of the studio, I was crying 'cause I knew he was slowly dying from his terminal illness. Ben heard me crying and walked over toward me wondering I was crying for. I told him, "Peter went to the doctors a few days ago and found out he's terminally ill with pneumonia and bronchitis. Plus, he was going to end up dying before his thirty-third birthday." Ben couldn't believe what I told him so he gave me the tighest hug in the world and Roger also overheard what I told Ben so he gave me a tight hug as well. Suddenly, I heard the door open, I turned around to see Pete and rest of the cast/crew walk in behind him. I did all of Pete's outdoor scenes from "The Man Who Broke the Bank At Red Gap", "The Men Who Corrupted Hadleyburg" and "The Biggest Game in the West". After I finished: Glen Larson, Roy Huggins, Peter, Paul Frees, Broderick Crawford, Rudy Vallee, Roger Davis, Ben Murphy, J.D. Cannon and the rest of the guest stars couldn't believe how much I sounded like Pete. So, they decided that I would dub Pete's voice here on out if he didn't make it.
After the long day at the "Alias Smith and Jones" soundstage and recording studio finished, Pete decided to take me out to dinner one last time before the bronchitis and pneumonia took his life. All of the sudden, I felt two fingers go under my chin and he lifted up my head to look into my eyes. He noticed that my eyes were bloodshot red from me crying so much. Pete gently said, "Your eyes are bloodshot red. Have you been crying?" I looked into his eyes and knew I couldn't lie to him. I nodded my head and told him, "When you left the recording studio to get the rest of the cast/crew, I knew that you're slowly dying from your illness. Ben and Roger heard me crying and asked me what was going on. I told them about your illness because I figured they had the right to know and I..." After suddenly stopping in mid-sentence, he gave me a very tight hug and told me not to worry. He said, "Even though I'm not going to be here physically, at least you've got me on film. I'm staying on "Alias Smith and Jones" as long as I can before I go." I nodded my head and we walked away from the soundstage/recording studio. He said, "After dinner, I want to take you somewhere but I can't tell you where 'cause it's a surprise."
After we finished dinner, we got back into his 1969 Dodge Charger R/T and he started to drive somewhere but he wouldn't let me see where we were going. I didn't mind because I was actually watching an episode from the first season of "Alias Smith and Jones" called "The Man Who Murdered Himself", which was one of my favorite episodes. We arrived to where he decided to take me and I heard him saying, "Miss Daisy Jonas. Welcome to the set of "The Dukes of Hazzard". I couldn't believe it! I was actually on the set of my other favorite show, "The Dukes of Hazzard". As I walked onto the set, the whole entire "Dukes" cast came over to greet me. All of the sudden, Pete told me that he had another surprise for me and I had to close my eyes. I closed my eyes and then I felt something, like a hat, go on my head. I opened my eyes to find out that Peter had given me his Heyes hat that had the strings on it like it does in the second season. I couldn't believe he gave me his hat. I also noticed in the hat that Pete's famous brown leather gloves were in hat as well. I couldn't believe he was giving me this stuff. I did not understand why he was giving me all of this. He said, "I know I shouldn't be talking about me dying but I wanted to give you my "Heyes" stuff for you to remember me by." The "Dukes" cast knew he was dying and they noticed I was really emotional about it. Suddenly, an idea popped in my head. I asked, "Does anyone here know how to do the "Hoedown Throwdown" by Miley Cyrus?" Everyone nodded their head and we all decided to do it. Though Peter had a hard time breathing and was always coughing, he decided to do it anyway. After being on the "Dukes" set for 3 hours, Pete decided to take me back to his Glen Green apartment. We got to his apartment and as we walked in, I couldn't believe how awesome his apartment looked.
He asked me what episode I was watching when we on our way to "The Dukes of Hazzard" set and I told him that I watching the first season episode, "The Man Who Murdered Himself". Then, he walked toward his tape stand to pull a DVD marked "Alias Smith and Jones Season 1 Episodes". He put the DVD into the DVD player and selected "The Man Who Murdered Himself" We got to the part where Heyes (Duel) was about to kiss Julia (Juliette Mills) when he asked me, "Would you like to participate in seeing how my kissing technique was with Julia?" I smiled, which meant "yes". We looked at each other for a minute, then Pete leaned forward and kissed me softly on the lips. I accepted it but I didn't throw myself into it. He pulled away, smiled and kissed me again. This time our arms went around each other and he lowered me to the couch. A few minutes later, he wanted me, just for fun, to tell him what I observed/learned from his technique. I began: he gives two little, gentle, tiny kisses. Then a penetrating look into my eyes (which it seemed I was witnessing an intimate thing) and then a powerful kiss that moved me backward. I also told him that he was the only actor I knew who does that. Suddenly, Pete started coughing violently and he ran into the kitchen to you-know. To make him feel better, I decided to sing a song by Miley Cyrus called "Dream" since it was my favorite song and I wanted to see what he thought of it.
After I finished the song, he hoarsely said that I did a good job in singing that song and I sound just like her. We both looked at the clock and it was 12:33 AM. So, both of us retired to bed. Around 1:25 AM, I was woken up by Pete coughing very violently. It was too hard for me to sleep 'cause I thought he was going to quit breathing everytime he coughed. After a while, around 1:33, I decided to go and check on him. I walked into the room and he suddenly said, "Daisy, you gotta help me. I can't...breathe". I hurried to the phone and called an ambulence plus the police to come to his apartment right away. I kept rubbing his back, chest and ran my fingers through his soft, dark brown hair. The ambulence arrived and we all put him on a stretcher, along with an oxygen mask and loaded him into the ambulence. I asked the doctors if I could use my cell phone to call Roy Huggins, Glen Larson, Roger Davis, Ben Murphy and Juliette Mills to let them know what's going on. They said go ahead and I started dialing. As I talked to them, Pete kept violently coughing, despite the oxygen mask. We arrived at a LA hospital and Peter was rushed into the emergency room. I sat in the waiting room as Roy, Glen, Roger, Ben and Juliette walked in. They noticed that I started to cry because Peter was in the ER dying. At 3:25 AM, a doctor walked out into the waiting room and said, "I'm very sorry but he didn't make it. He just passed away." I broke down crying right in front of Roy, Glen, Roger, Ben and Juliette. I asked the doctor if I was allowed to go in and see him one last time and the doctor nodded.
As I walked toward the emergency room, the doctor allowed Ben and Roger to go with me for support. We all walked into the emergency room to see Pete's lifeless body lying on the hosptial bed. I couldn't believe it was happening. Pete Duel, aged 32, was lying dead in a hospital bed in a LA hospital. Roger and Ben stood on both sides of me as I took Pete's hand and held it tightly. I knew that Pete didn't want to die but he couldn't stop the illness. I said, "I can't believe this is happening. At least I got to spend the last few days with him. People on the set of "Alias Smith and Jones" and "The Dukes of Hazzard" ain't gonna believe this. Ben walked closer to Pete's lifeless body and said, "I know you were on "Alias Smith and Jones" for 2 years but it was great working with you. You taught me a lot while I was working with you. Thanks a bunch, partner." He easily patted Pete's shoulder and went to go sit down. Then, Roger walked over toward Pete and said, "You were a real great friend Pete and I enjoyed working with you. We may have played enemies in "Smiler with a Gun" and "The Young Country" but we will always be friends. See you soon, partner." I told them I couldn't stay in the room anymore so we all walked out. The next three to go in was Juliette, Roy and Glen.
The next morning, we all walked onto the "Alias Smith and Jones" and got everyone together. Along with the cast/crew, Pete's younger sister, Pamela Deuel, and his younger brother, Geoffrey Deuel, was there. I got all myself together and said, "I have some bad news. At 3:25 AM, one of our beloved stars, Pete Duel, lost his battle with depression, chronic bronchitis and pneumonia at a LA hospital. He was 32." I could not say another word and I walked towards Pete's 1969 Dodge Charger R/T, which Pamela and Geoffrey, turned over to me. The whole cast and crew couldn't believe it. Later on in the day, a radio annouced came on and said, "Onto the death of Peter Duel, the star of the TV series, "Alias Smith and Jones". Duel was found dead in the bedroom of his Hollywood Hills home and police were notified by his girlfriend, Daisy Jonas. A few days before Duel's death, he was seen going to the doctors and from his family doctor, he was diagnosed with chronic pneumonia and bronchits which gave him less a month to live. Duel was reportedly a heavy smoker which led to his terminal illness. Daisy called the police and the hospital around 1:33 and Duel was pronounced dead at 3:25 AM at a LA emergency room. Duel will be buried in his hometown of Penfield, New York".
When I had the dream, it scared the crap out of me and I suddenly woke up. I looked at my computer's desktop background to see a picture of Pete looking back at me. It was really weird because I had the feeling that somehow he tried to tell me he's alright.
