In 1970, "Alias Smith and Jones" creator Glen A. Larson told Pete about a new series. Pete had to do it due to his contract. He had a contract with Universal from 1967 and it would expire in 1974.
In the series, Pete was cast as outlaw Hannibal Heyes alias Joshua Smith. During the show, he had mixed feelings about the series but he had fun playing "Heyes". Unfortunately, Pete only completed 33 of the 50 episodes of the series due to his violent exit from life.

In the episode, "The Biggest Game in the West" (in which Pete was filming at the time of his death), there is a shot of Heyes' back when he walking towards the hotel. If you look closely, it is NOT Roger Davis, but Peter Duel himself. A few scenes in the episode show Pete from the back but it's Roger when they show Heyes' face.
